The Small Animal Rescue Team responded to the L.A. River at Victory and Ethel yesterday to rescue KoKo, an owners cat that had been trapped in the L.A. River for 4 days.
People could hear the cat crying but couldn't find any way to get him out so SmART was called. A conventional humane trap wouldn't work because the temperature was in the 100's and with no shade in sight and no one to monitor the trap, if KoKo went into the trap, he could be in direct sunlight for hours.
Nett, Nav and Reds arrived and set up an Artificial High Point with a rappel line and haul line. KoKo could be seen inside one of the drain pipes so Nett and Nav rappelled into the L.A. River while Reds stayed topside to assist in raising KoKo once rescued.
Nett slowly approached the drain pipe only to have KoKo welcome her with purrs and cries of joy. Nett was able to make the grab and rescue KoKo.
KoKo was raised out of the L.A. River by Reds who immediately scanned him for a microchip. KoKo was microchipped!! Nav called KoKos owners who were very relieved to find out that their beloved cat was alive and well.
KoKo was reunited with his family Nugget and Reggie (his cat and dog siblings) and is doing fine.
Fox Channel 11 covered the entire rescue and interviewed Reds.
