Japanese Ministry of Defense adjusted the scrambling situation of its Air
Self-Defense Force. In your opinion, how many considerations are there behind
the action?
DU Wenlong, Military Expert:
There are two reasons for this adjustment. First, Japan wants to make clear
that it is engaging in an increasingly tight encirclement of China's air
activity. Previously, it was one-on-one jet encirclement, or man-mark on
equal scales. However, from the present scale and scope, we can see that
Japan has been gathering more advantages. With such intension of
encirclement, it may cause severe interference for China's flight in relevant
zones, which shows air supremacy of Japan in this regard.
Second, Japan tends to magnify its insufficiency. Because if it conducts
face-to-face or one-on-one interception, by the current scale and quantity,
there exists a large gap. If it has to be intercepted by a ratio of 4:1, the
gap will be even greater. The gap could be used as an important excuse for
Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force to increase its combat troops and improve
their weapons and equipment.
